At the end of June 2017, the British credit union sector had:

  • Around 305 credit unions across England, Scotland and Wales employing more than 1,700 staff
  • 1,290,545 people using credit unions, including 136,491 junior depositors
  • Total assets of £1.5 billion
  • Total loans of £803 million
  • Total deposits of £1.25 billion
  • Annual turnover of £113 million (year to June 2017)

Growth

In the year to September 2016, the sector grew:

  • Membership by 0.55%
  • Assets by 6%
  • Loans by 6%
  • Deposits by 6%
  • Turnover by 1.5%

In the decade from 2006 to 2016, the sector:

  • Doubled in membership and loans by 199% and 215% respectively
  • Almost trebled deposits and assets by 275% and 282% respectively

International

While credit unions in Britain remain relatively small, internationally there are:

  • Active credit union sectors in 109 countries with 60,500 credit unions
  • More than 223 million credit union members
  • Assets of almost $1.8 trillion
  • Loans of almost $1.2 trillion
  • Deposits of almost $1.5 trillion

High penetration rates in many developed countries:

  • 48% in USA
  • 44% in Canada
  • 77% in Ireland
  • 27% in Australia
