British Credit Unions travel to the Washington DC for the CUNA Governmental Affairs Conference

02 Mar 18

The CUNA Governmental Affairs Conference (GAC) is the premier event for political impact in the US credit union industry.  It gathers thousands of industry leaders from across the US and the globe, this year including five ABCUL credit unions.

Delegates heard a range of expert speakers) talk about the challenges and opportunities facing the sector, as well as some inspiring examples of credit unions making a real difference to the lives of people in disadvantaged communities.

The GAC was attended by more than 5,000 credit union leaders from across the world, all of whom learned how best to make the sector’s  voices heard in the financial industry. Credit unions in the USA now serve 100 million members – equivalent to one in three Americans, CUNAs message to delegates at the conference was to remind legislators and regulators why credit unions are Americans’ best financial partners.

The British delegation attended as part of ABCUL’s partnership with Georgia Credit Union Affiliates. They picked up experiences and ideas from their American counterparts which have succeeded for them in helping their communities. Expert speakers in workshops helped credit unions understand how to approach day to day working life within the political, media and business of the financial sector and how we can apply their experience into a credit union.

ABCUL’s Head of Member Services, Rosanna Donovan, accompanied the delegation to Washington, she said: “We made some great connections during the conference and look forward to developing the skills and experiences we gained at GAC back home. What is great to see and a personal highlight of the week for me was our interaction with our American colleagues and understanding the similarities of in the challenges and opportunities we face as credit unions. I look forward to sharing our experiences with members at the ABCUL Annual Conference in two weeks.  We’re thankful to CUNA and our Georgian colleagues for making us so welcome and helping us to get the maximum value out of our visit.”

The British contingent was made up of 1st Class Credit Union, Commsave Credit Union, NHS Credit Union, Police Credit Union and Voyager Alliance Credit Union.
