CU Futures launches
29 Apr 16
Young people from across the credit union movement have gathered for the launch of CU Futures.
CU Futures is an innovative programme to support and develop young people across the credit union sector, which is run by The Credit Union Foundation alongside ABCUL, with sponsorship from Citi Foundation.
The two day launch in Manchester this week was attended by 21 successful candidates from 20 credit unions across Britain, ranging from the Highlands and Islands of Scotland to the south coast of England. Each candidate has a sponsor from their own credit union, and 10 sponsors also travelled for the launch.
A bespoke development plan has been designed to incorporate education and training, engagement with the sector and external stakeholders, specialist credit union financial knowledge, and personal development. Candidates will also have the opportunity to attend events at Westminster and in Scotland, as well as the World Credit Union Conference in Belfast, and they will graduate from the 12 month programme at the 2017 ABCUL Annual Conference next March.
Credit Union Foundation Director Annette Warne-Thomas said: “We are really excited to be running CU Futures, and there was so much energy from the brilliant young people who gathered in Manchester for the launch.
“Over the year, these young people – who are the future of the British credit union movement – will not only experience some unique opportunities for personal learning and development, but will in turn be equipped to develop and educate their peers and colleagues and the next generation of credit union leaders.
“We are privileged to have such bright and enthusiastic young people in our sector willing to step up to this challenge. We are committed to seeing all of them graduate in March 2017 and we will encourage, support and work together as a strong team throughout the Programme.”
One of the candidates is Debbie Smith-Hands from Pennine Community Credit Union (PCCU). Her sponsor, PCCU Chief Executive Kathryn Fogg, said: “Myself and the Board of Directors are very excited and feel very privileged to have Debbie taking part in the CU Futures program. The course is exactly what we needed for our succession planning.”
CU Futures is sponsored by Citi Foundation, who provided each participant with a Kindle Fire to support them in completing the programme’s course work. Candidates are also engaging in fundraising activity to help ensure the CU Futures programme becomes a sustainable annual opportunity for the credit union movement’s most talented future leaders.
Further updates will be provided as the programme progresses throughout the year.
