World Conference speakers confirmed

24 May 16

The 2016 World Credit Union Conference will hear keynote speeches from Ian Goldin and Theresa Payton.

The annual event is organised by the World Council of Credit Unions, and is this year being held in Belfast from 17 to 20 July. More than 1,800 delegates from credit unions across the globe are expected to gather for a range of plenary and breakout sessions over the course of the conference.

Ian Goldin is Director of the Oxford Martin School and Professor of Globalisation and Development at the University of Oxford. He is a former Vice President of the World Bank, served as Chief Executive and Managing Director of the Development Bank of Southern Africa, and was an advisor to the former South African President Nelson Mandela.

Prior to this, he was Principal Economist at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development in London, and Programme Director at the OECD Development Centre in Paris, where he directed programmes on trade, environment and sustainable development.

At the conference, he will look at the economic, demographic and technological trends that will affect the future of credit unions.

Theresa Payton was the White House Chief Information Officer from 2006 to 2008, where she oversaw IT operations for the President and his 3,000 staff. Her prior positions include roles in banking technology at Bank of America and Wells Fargo. In 2008 she founded Fortalice Solutions, a security, risk and fraud consulting company that works to help organisations understand and improve their IT systems.

Ms Payton has co-written two books on cyber crime: Privacy in the Age of Big Data and Protecting Your Internet Identity. In 2010, she was named as one of the top 25 most influential people in security by Security Magazine. Her conference speech will focus on cyber security and the challenges credit unions need to address in this space.

As well as the keynote speakers, delegates have a range of breakout sessions to choose from covering a range of highly relevant topics for credit unions. The British credit union movement is represented among the international speakers, with ABCUL President and NHS Credit Union Chief Executive Robert Kelly speaking on Small credit union sustainability, and ABCUL Director and PCU Chief Executive Peter Evans speaking on Keeping values constant with growth.

ABCUL Chief Executive Mark Lyonette said: "The World Conference is a unique opportunity to hear some of the global leaders in their fields address a credit union audience. With the conference being in Belfast this year, attendance is much more affordable for British credit unions than when it is held further afield, and I know a large condingent from the British movement have already booked to take advantage of this exciting learning and networking opportunity."

Full details of the conference, including the booking form, are available here. ABCUL is the only British trade association affiliated to the World Council of Credit Unions, and ABCUL members can therefore access a significant discount by booking at the member rate.
