Sheffield Credit Union has filmed member testimonials highlighting the difference the credit union has made to people’s lives.

The credit union, which serves anyone who lives or works in South Yorkshire, asked its members to say how saving, borrowing or budgeting through Sheffield Credit Union has helped them, and were delighted by the responses they received.

Working with a local film producer (Hugh Mann-Adamson of Let There Be Light Productions), the credit union filmed five of these testimonials using actors. The members concerned gave their full permission for their stories to be dramatised and received a reward into their savings accounts as a thank you. The films were unveiled at the credit union’s Annual General Meeting in March, and can now be viewed on their website.

Sheffield Credit Union Chief Executive Jackie Hallewell said: “We decided to ask our members what they liked about their credit union experience, and were delighted with the responses. Some show the journey made by members from crisis to control, and others show how varied credit union membership can be according to the needs and requirements of the individual member.

“We are proud that we can offer this individualised service, and feel that understanding what our members value can help to shape our offering to them. We decided to share this on social media, our website, on canvas prints in the office, and to ask local film makers to produce a film from some of the member testimonials. It’s important to share the good news about credit unions so that more people understand the excellent work that we do.”

Sheffield Credit Union was established in 2004 in an amalgamation of a number of smaller credit unions in the city. The credit union now employs around 20 paid staff who are supported in their work by a similar number of committed volunteers, and serves around 7,000 members from its branches in Sheffield and Rotherham.
