Just Credit Union’s work has been recognised by Social Enterprise UK for locally rooted social enterprises that trade for the benefit of their community and have a track record of delivering real benefits for the community they serve. A spokesperson for Social Enterprise UK said “The quantity and quality of work being done across the UK is hugely inspiring and a real testament to the strength of social enterprise in this country.”
Karen Farrow, Just Credit Union’s Chief Officer, spoke about her delight the credit union had been nominated for the award; Karen said “Being shortlisted for this award demonstrates to our staff just how much they are valued and the contribution they make both to Just Credit Union and the community.”
The awards were created by Social Enterprise UK to celebrate a sector which sees more than 70,000 enterprises employ almost a million people while generating £18.5bn for the economy. Michael Sheen was in attendance at the award ceremony and delivered a speech why Social Enterprises can change the world, Michael said: “It’s a privilege to attend my first Social Enterprise Awards and 2017 is the biggest and best yet! The many nominees and winners show us that you can put people and society before profit AND be a successful business. When they win, we all win!”
The Hollywood star is a supporter of cooperatives and released a video on International Credit Union Day 2017 in which he encourages people to join their local credit union. A member of a credit union himself, Mr Sheen has been active in promoting co-operative business models as a means to empower communities.
The video argues that if more people were to join credit unions, the UK would be a fairer country. Published on the official YouTube channel of ABCUL, it includes information on how to find local credit unions via the Find Your Credit Union website.
