Cross Party Group on Credit Unions inputs into National Awareness Raising
08 Dec 17
The Cross Party Group on Credit Unions, convened by Ruth Maguire MSP and for which ABCUL provides the secretariat, met on Tuesday evening to hear from MSPs, credit unions and stakeholders on how the Scottish Government can work with the sector on an awareness raising campaign.
This comes on the back of a brand new commitment by the Scottish Government to fund promotion of the sector, announced in this year’s Programme for Government. A key part of that commitment was to work with the sector on delivering this, and so we were delighted to welcome Kenny Pentland of the Scottish Government to speak at the meeting and hear from credit unions. There was a lively discussion and a large number of credit unions had the opportunity to express their view to the Government.
The meeting also heard from the Scottish Government on its plans to address funeral poverty, and their ambition to pilot a new funeral bond with credit unions.
Commenting after the meeting, Ruth Maguire said: “This Cross Party Group meeting provided an excellent opportunity for credit unions to contribute to the Scottish Government’s key commitments on the sector, including a national awareness raising campaign and the piloting of a funeral bond. The discussion was engaging and insightful, and I look forward to seeing both the campaign and the funeral bond take shape over the coming months and years. I would like to thank everyone who came along for contributing to such a successful evening.”
Karen Hurst, ABCUL’s Scottish Policy Officer, said “It’s great to see credit unions in Scotland working together to influence the Government in this way. We really look forward to continuing this conversation and ensuring that the campaign has as much impact as possible”.
