Credit Unions in Renfrewshire celebrate the launch of credit union film

22 Dec 17

Local children and young people have been celebrating the launch of a film highlighting the benefits of credit unions in Renfrewshire.

The 3 minute film, produced by Engage Renfrewshire and funded by STV Children’s Appeal, features local nursery and primary school children, high school pupils and staff and volunteers from 5 credit unions operating in the area. The film was launched at St Mirren Football Stadium in Paisley with an preview screening,  money quiz, and an awards ceremony recognising the hard work of the credit union sector in Renfrewshire.

Trophies were presented by Councillor Michelle Campbell, who praised the work of the credit unions in encouraging young people to save from an early age.

Hillview Nursery Family Coordinator Nicola Anderson said, “We were delighted to be part of this crucially important project, getting a message to our youngest age group that saving is so important.”

Nicola added, “The children really understood that saving even tiny amounts all adds up. The children have all shared their own experiences of saving for ‘something special’ - with one child opening her credit union account for a holiday treat and another for a birthday gift! Families are beginning to understand that the credit unions locally can help you build up a few reserves”.

Engage Renfrewshire’s chief executive Alan McNiven said, “we’re so grateful to STV for the funding to make this film. Having conducted a credit union awareness survey last year, we knew a large percentage of people thought credit unions were only for older people. Making a film offered us an ideal opportunity to challenge that myth, and to get young people involved in their local credit union.

“The film launch was a brilliant event; our thanks go to everyone who participated particularly Childcare First, St Anthony's Primary School, Mary Russell Secondary School, Gryffe High School and The STAR Project.”
