In Ireland, half the population are credit union members. In the United States, one in four Americans is a credit union member. In the Caribbean, penetration is over 70% on some islands. In these countries, the credit union advantage lies in members receiving higher returns on savings and paying lower interest on loans than they would at a bank or building society.
The Government has identified financial exclusion as one of the most important aspects of a cycle of deprivation. The credit union movement provides one of the best-targeted means of addressing this.
