Membership in ABCUL credit unions has trebled since 1995, when it stood at 130,000. In the same time period, money saved by credit union members has increased from £57 million to £380 million, an increase of over 600%. The amount of credit union money out on loan grew in the ten year period from £54 million to £353 million, a similar, six-fold increase. The average ABCUL credit union member had £439 in shares in 1995, and now holds over £939, an increase of over 200%.
The number of credit unions continues to fall across the country, as small credit unions join forces to bring credit union services to larger areas. Despite this fall, new credit unions are continuing to launch; city and borough-wide credit unions have recently launched in York, Oxford, Hackney and Lambeth, to name just a few. Credit unions across the country are also expanding their common bonds to enable them to offer services across a wider area; Northumberland, Worcestershire and Suffolk are just some of the areas to gain full credit union coverage over the past year.
